About Dick Sauer

Dick Sauer I use the watercolor medium to paint seascapes to express the energy and movement in the universe as seen in the sun (93 million miles away), the waves, and the clouds.....mostly in the Caribbean and along the Florida east coast. I have studios in Hollywood, Florida and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In my abstracts I explore my inner universe with the play of color and shapes.

In my fluid and spontaneous ink drawings I am inspired by the sun's energy in the growing plants experienced everywhere, a continous concert of "Dancing Leaves."

REVIEWS:
DICK SAUER FINDS INSPIRATION IN THE CARIBBEAN by Sidney Gilbert
For certain artists, excellence lies in the exquisite simpliciy of means by which they arrive at sophisticated aesthetic solutions. One of the most obvious examples from art history is Giorgio Morandi, the maestro of tabletop still life. Among contemporary painters, however, few can orchestrate a handful of set elements as authoritatively as Dick Sauer, whose solo show, "Caribbean Seascapes and Portraits," is at Jadite Galleries, 415 West 50 Street, from June 7 through 25.
Although Sauer is a New York artist, he maintains a seaside residence in Puerto Rico. Many of his paintings are inspired by the cloud formations he observes passing over his house, blown by the trade winds, as well as similar scenes around Caracas, and in the Venezuelan basin.
The beauty in these paintings results from how masterfully Sauer manipulates the billowing white shapes of the clouds, juxtaposed with the vibrant blue sky and the aquamarine waves. He weaves thes three main elements into compositions with a unique chromatic charm and rhythmic grace.
The cumulous forms vary greatly from picture to picture, setting the formal pace with their billowing contours, creating a sense of movement that is set off by Sauer's handling of light, particularly the tonal subtleties in the blue sky and the luminous highllights on the aquamarine waves. Some of the most striking paintings are dominated by cumulonimbuses, the dense, creamy white layers of cloud that often appear before tropical storms. In other, equally strong compositions, the simple addition of a glowing orange orb creates a sense of heat that permeates the entire picture. By severely limiting his formal vocabulary, the artist is able to make dramatic changes, through the addition or manipulation of any 'single compositional element.'
Another side to Dick Sauer's creative personality is revealed in his "Caribbean Portraits," a series of black and white photographs of Dominican and Columbian women in New York and Santo Domingo. Here, with characteristically unpretentious simmpllicity of means, Sauer presents images of feminine beauty far deeper and much more affectingly authentic than the whitewashed visions of fashion and the mass media.
